Things to do at the Red Sand Dunes

The Red Sand Dunes sit around an hour's drive west of Riyadh along the Mecca highway, which makes this the shortest desert outing on this site and the one built around activity rather than scenery: quad biking, sandboarding, dune bashing and sunset camps on orange sand.

Budget roughly half a day door to door once you add the drive both ways to an hour or two on the dunes, and check the current GetYourGuide or Viator listing for the exact price in SAR rather than a fixed figure here.

From May to September, midday heat regularly passes 40 degrees Celsius, so operators run these trips at sunrise or late afternoon; November to March brings milder days (around 20-25 degrees Celsius) that leave more flexibility on timing. It is a different trip from Edge of the World, which is farther out and view-focused rather than activity-focused.
